The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has alleged that former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju staged his own disappearance, following his resurfacing on Monday after reports that he had gone missing over the weekend.
Speaking hours after Tuju resurfaced under claims that he was hiding inside a home in Kiambu, DCI Director Amin Mohamed said that the investigative branch conducted a thorough forensic analysis that disputes Tuju’s claims.
Amin also pointed to the family’s refusal to cooperate with detectives and grant access to the residence as a factor that raised suspicion among investigators.
“Following the denial of access, we deployed a multi-agency team to secure the residence and preserve the integrity of the investigation while obtaining the necessary court orders,” Amin said.
He emphasised that the reported disappearance was not genuine
“Based on solid intelligence and meticulous forensic analysis, the DCI conclusively, and I am saying this without an iota of doubt, Tuju was physically present within his residence throughout the period in question. Even at the precise time his mobile phone was switched off at 18:18 hours on March 21, 2026, he was at his Karen residence,” Mr Amin said
The DCI boss described the incident as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and divert law enforcement resources. He said that after the family initially denied police access to Tuju’s home, a combined team of uniformed and plainclothes officers secured the residence while obtaining a search warrant from the courts.
He further warned that any deliberate attempts to mislead the public or misuse police resources would be dealt with firmly.
“We are resolute in ensuring that attempts to undermine confidence in our national institutions are thoroughly investigated and the perpetrators held accountable,” Mohammed stated. “Public trust is sacred and must be earned through a relentless pursuit of truth, evidence-based action and zero tolerance for deception.”
Tuju, however, said he went into hiding after he believed he was being trailed by suspicious people. He claimed he branched into Nandi Road and lost the alleged vehicle before abandoning his car along Miotoni Lane in Karen.
